The Return of Art Hang

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Starting June 8th we’re bringing back The Placebo Art Hang. Every* Friday, from 4-8pm, 47WB becomes an open hang-out space and art studio. Check out our zine library, learn how to knit (it’s useful year-round), bring music to share, use the space for your own projects, or just chill.

We’re also going to be having low-cost skillshares every month starting with topics like Silkscreening, Clothing Hacks, and Zine Making.

All event details are posted here, so check back soon or subscribe to our upcoming events via RSS feed or your calendar software (iCal and Google compatible.)

*Except for the Friday before Arts Alive!, which is when E2 needs the space for Hanging Art

Guitar Busted? Learn How to Fix it

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

The Placebo presents a workshop taught by Elliot Hallmark:

Topics Covered Include:

  • How to read circuit diagrams
  • Electric guitar theory (or how its supposed to work)
  • Common guitar wiring layouts (or what it might have looked like before someone else messed it up)
  • Soldering technique (or, how not to do an embarassing job on your friend’s guitar)
  • Diagnosing and fixing common problems (sound cuts in and out, crackles when you adjust the volume, and just plain doesn’t work).

London Calling parody

You are encouraged to bring your malfunctioning guitars, basses and other pick-up based electronic instruments (they’re all the same, but keyboards, amps, and stuff are completely different). You can fix them at the workshop with a little help. Also, bring your cables and we can even give your mics a go. If you do bring something to fix, bring whatever tools you need to open it.

Note: We’re not saying it’s impossible to fix your basket-case guitar, but there won’t be time in this workshop to do complete rebuilds.

When: Saturday, March 24 at 3pm
Where: The Ink People, 411 Twelfth Street, Eureka, next door to the Muni (map)
Cost: $2-$5 sliding scale (as always, your $2 annual Placebo membership is required)

G8 Info Tour @ The Placebo

Friday, March 16th, 2007

G8 Flyer

What: The G8 Info Tour

“Once a year the 8 richest nations meet behind closed doors in secret with no publized agenda or published minutes, to discuss the fate of the world. They’ve been making empty promises for decades about improving the environment, poverty in Africa, and lots more, but the fact is that the G8 is not the solution to these ills, it is the problem!

We are preparing in Germany for large scale protests against the G8 meeting this June 6-8, 2007, and plan to come tell you about what’s going on here. We have done over 200 presentations in 25+ countries since November 2005, and are now coming to your town!”

When: March 16th, 6-8 pm
Where: The Placebo, 47B West 3rd, Eureka (map)
Cost: $3 + $2 membership

Enjoy punch and pie while getting educated!

Placebo HRC

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

The Placebo Harm Reduction Collective is a DIY self help/ support group for those who want to deal with drug addiction and depression. If you would like to make changes in your life, continue to stay sober, or have support dealing- this is a confidential and compassionate environment. If you are part of another support group or drug treatment program already, you are still welcome to come.

Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies that reduce negative consequences of drug use, incorporating a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use to abstinence. Harm reduction strategies meet drug users where they’re at, addressing conditions of use along with the use itself. Because harm reduction demands that interventions and policies designed to serve drug users reflect specific individual and community needs, there is no universal definition of or formula for implementing harm reduction. More about Harm Reduction at harmreduction.org

When: Tuesday, March 6th, 5:30-7pm
Where: The Placebo, 47B West 3rd Street, Eureka (near the new CO-OP; enter via the Alley between 3rd and 4th)

Except the Fridays before Arts Alive when E2 folks’ll be hanging art! Show up anytime and do your thing: knitting (of course), music, art, reading, talking . . . it’s up to you. Speaking of which, we’re looking for Art Hang projects: stuff that can be mostly done in one sitting so people have something to take home. If you have an idea, let us know!

When: Friday, January 26th, 4pm to 8 pm. Show up anytime.
Where: The Placebo, 47B West 3rd St, between A and Commercial. (Access is via the alley between 3rd and 4th)
Cost: FREE. Bring yer own supplies, though.
